What Does it Mean When a Diamond is Conflict Free?

By Clark Walker

Many shoppers looking for diamonds online will no doubt study the Four C’s of diamonds, (cut, carat, clarity, and color) but it’s extremely important to morally shop for conflict free diamonds.  Many people have referred to this as “the fifth C in diamonds.”  Today I’ll share with you what it means to be a conflict free diamond, and also share with you my top vendors that I know sell diamonds that are mined without any conflicts.

What Are Conflict Free Diamonds?

If you have seen the movie “Blood Diamond” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, you most likely entirely understand the sad truth that many diamonds are illegally sold to finance wars and terrorism.  These types of diamonds are commonly referred to as conflict, or like the movie title suggests, blood diamonds.  I strongly urge you to watch that to truly understand the sad underbelly of society that plays in this space and illegally distributes diamonds that come from war-torn areas of Africa and make their way around the globe in dirty business deals.

On the bright side, there is another side of the business that sides with ethics from the mining process, to the sales process.

These diamonds are called conflict free diamonds, and there is not a single connection to any terrorism or evil groups of people throughout the process.

When you shop for diamonds in a retail store, make sure you get a guarantee that they sell only conflict free diamonds otherwise you will directly be supporting criminal behavior and only add to the problem.  It’s illegal in most countries, including the US, to be involved in the trade of conflict diamonds.

Jewelers That Sell Conflict Free Diamonds

I can recommend a few companies that sell conflict free diamonds.  Please visit each below and see a full review about what they offer.

  • James Allen (Online).

This is by far the best place to get anything diamond or engagement ring related if you are shopping anywhere in the world.  No hassle returns and no pushy salespersons!

  • Blue Nile (Also Web Based.)

If there is a “1A” in James Allen, there is a “1B” in Blue Nile.  You can buy there with confidence and know that they are a very credible company offering about anything you need in the jewelry space.
